President Bola Tinubu has sent shockwaves through the National Assembly after abruptly withdrawing a previous mega-loan request and submitting a revised external borrowing plan of $7.7 billion (approximately ₦10.9 trillion).

External borrowing and fiscal deficits remain one of the most contentious subjects in Nigerian economic policy, drawing intense scrutiny from citizens and lawmakers alike.

The latest legislative development unfolded during Senate plenary when Senate President Godswill Akpabio read out a formal letter from the presidency detailing the updated borrowing strategy:

The Slashed Request and Replacement: The fresh proposal seeking approval for $7,707,404,882.49 officially replaces the previous, much heavier $20.52 billion external loan request submitted just weeks prior, which faced significant public eyebrow-raising.

The Budget Deficit and Exchange Rate: Calculated at a projected exchange rate of ₦1,400 to the dollar, the proposed external facility is targeted at plugging a portion of the massive ₦20.2 trillion deficit embedded in the 2026 fiscal budget.

Targeted Sectors and Conditions: The presidency defended the loan by stating the funds will be channeled into critical infrastructure, defense, agriculture, healthcare, power, and education to sustain macroeconomic reforms.

Meanwhile, Senate leadership referred the request to the Committee on Local and Foreign Debts to scrutinize terms and scout for favorable lenders.

Whether viewed as a necessary fiscal lifeline to keep public infrastructure running or another heavy layer of debt burden for future generations, Tinubu's latest multi-billion dollar loan bid ensures the economy remains front and center in the national conversation!
