A 25-year-old newlywed businessman has been arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu after the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency recovered 72 wraps of cocaine from his body.

The suspect, identified as Lovely Chukwulobelu, was intercepted on Thursday, September 25, while preparing to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Portugal through Addis Ababa.

NDLEA operatives reportedly found the cocaine after placing him under observation following his interception at the airport’s departure hall. He later expelled a total of 72 wraps of the Class A drug, according to the agency.

The suspect, who resides in Portugal, had reportedly returned to Nigeria recently for his wedding.

Chukwulobelu told NDLEA officials that he got married on September 13, 2026, and had travelled back to Nigeria for the ceremony.

He also said he previously operated a car decoration business at the Trade Fair Complex in the Ojo area of Lagos before relocating to Portugal in May 2023.

According to the suspect, he became involved in drug trafficking to raise money to offset expenses from his wedding.

NDLEA officials arrested him while he was preparing to leave the country after the ceremony.

The agency continues to investigate the case, while the suspect is expected to face legal proceedings in line with Nigerian law.

NDLEA has continued to warn travellers against using airports to traffic illicit drugs, noting that passengers remain subject to screening and other security checks.
