The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned suspects over an alleged N18.2 million fraud involving the abandoned Nigerian phone number of popular celebrity blogger, Tunde Ednut.
The suspects allegedly took over the phone number after the blogger stopped using it last year and reportedly impersonated him to defraud brands and advertisers seeking promotional deals on his Instagram page.
One of the victims reportedly lost N2 million, while the total amount allegedly obtained through the scheme was said to have reached N18.2 million.
Following repeated warnings to the public, Ednut reportedly petitioned the EFCC, prompting an investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects in Abuja.
The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared in court. Justice Ibrahim subsequently ordered their remand at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja and adjourned the case until November 17, 2026.
The case highlights the importance of verifying advertising arrangements, phone numbers and payment details before transferring money, even when dealing with familiar public figures.
