The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has thrown out its controversial plan to switch the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to a four-year cycle, officially restoring the beloved biennial (two-year) format.

In a stunning policy shift that has sent shockwaves through the global football community, CAF has listened to widespread outcry and canceled its blueprint to transition AFCON into a quadrennial event.

Initially, football authorities toyed with the four-year model to clear space for a proposed Africa Nations League.

However, after a rigorous review by the Executive Committee, leadership concluded that the proposed tournament would take years to match the financial stability and immense developmental weight of AFCON.

Key highlights of the historic reversal include:

Protecting African Football: President Motsepe emphasized that bringing back the two-year cycle is vital to advancing the interests of CAF's 54 member associations and protecting the competitive edge of African stars playing abroad.

The Updated Roadmap: The grand tournament is locked in to take place in 2027 across joint host nations Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, followed by consecutive editions in 2028, 2031, and 2033.

The World Cup Exception: In strict alignment with FIFA tradition, no AFCON tournament will be staged in 2030, ensuring zero calendar overlap with the FIFA World Cup.

For the Super Eagles and millions of passionate fans across the continent, the return to a rapid-fire two-year schedule means less waiting, more high-octane football drama, and endless opportunities to conquer Africa!
